From my childhood I have seen and followed this ritual. Of bringing home a Ganesha idol on Ganesh Chaturthi. Keep it for 10 days praying twice a day. Treating the lord of sweets with his favorite delights. And the kids were supposed to do the decoration stuff with their naive tinge of innovation and creativity with whatever junk we had at home :D
As a small kid it used to matter so much that we get a bigger idol ever year. But watching what happened to it after its been "visarjit", now I prefer small ones with much of biodegradable ones. Me and my brother even made an idol ourselves with raw black clay and painted with water colors. Being in places where I couldnt find an idol, I made a paper cutout and prayed it. Yeah afterall its the spirit that matters. But if you are in India. You can do it thoroughly. Performing each and every ritual in detail.
